Moving on to Spark!
Saturday, 11 March 2006

After long and hard deliberation, I have decided to move on from Genuine Games and take up a job offer with a new company (at least for me) called Spark Unlimited. So far, it looks like I will have a great time working there. The project I am assigned on sounds like something I myself would come up with, and it's really exciting for me (the project reminds me of an old design document I wrote about a saboteur game). The people seem knowledgeable and eager to do their job to their best ability and overall the work environment is great.

Leaving Genuine Games was a fairly difficult decision for me, since I have great respect for the guys there and I have made some good friends. I certainly hope the security people will let me through the door when I go to visit them sometime :). I wish all of them the best of luck in the future.

I am looking to move closer to Sherman Oaks (where Spark has their offices). Watch this space for other important updates.

Bulletproof sells over 1.6 million units over the hollidays
Wednesday, 15 February 2006

Wo-hoo! Just got word that the last game I worked on - 50Cent: Bulletproof - sold more than any of us developing it expected. As of December last year, it has sold over 1.6 million units worldwide. That in itself is quite cool, but the fact that I also started receiving royalties from it is even cooler. Yep, my first "real" royalty - may they only multiply.

Today was a generally happy day, so I had to commemorate it on my web site as well. I really have nothing further to say. Yeah I would like it if the game didn't get reviewed so badly, but ultimately reviewers review all games at the same scale - those that take 6 years to make and those that take 8 months. In that sense, for Bulletproof it was more important that we get the project done on time then to delay it and arguably create a better reviewing experience.

Minor site update, but I am proud of it!
Sunday, 22 January 2006

The Reviews section has a slight improvement. It is now possible to filter the reviewed games by the platform on which they were reviewed. Of course, there are only 3 games up there at the time of this writing, but I promise I will write more reviews as time goes by. I have played and/or finished a few games that I will write about, among which are: The Warriors (PS2), Civilization 4 (PC), Darkwatch (PS2) etc...

Planned improvements on the Reviews section include a search form, as well as more ways to order the data in the table (for example, by score average). I am still not bored with poking around ASP and SQL, so I will make more improvements as time goes on. Stay tuned.

Reviews section online - just in time for the New Year
Saturday, 31 December 2005

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I introduce to you - the newest addition to the site - the Reviews section. This is where I will be hosting all the reviews that I will write in the future, and I have organized them in a nice database table, so that they can be searched, filtered, ordered etc. You can't do anything of the sort right now, but it will come in due time. I will add all those cool features once I have some spare time to dedicate to the site again.

About the reviews - I am writing a small FAQ for the review process (I hope to have it up this week). I am not sure how many games I will review or how often - check back if you are interested. I know I have played some games recently and that I have something to say for all of them, but lets see if I can beat my laziness and actually sit down and write something.

The HalfLife 2 review has been moved from the Ideas&Rants section into the Reviews section. Its pretty damn long, and I can't even finish reading it myself - so I will probably try to be more succinct in the reviews to come.

I am also experimenting with the formula for calculating the total score - you may notice that it affected the overall HL2 score adversely :). That will probably change in the future. It will all be explained in the FAQ.

Bulletproof gameplay interview starring yours truly
Monday, 7 November 2005

I was recently interviewed to promote the latest game I have been working on, 50Cent: Bulletproof. It went gold about 2 weeks ago, and I am very pleased with the resulting game. As always, it could have been better, but the game represents quite the achievement for 8 months gameplay development.
The video was posted on the IGN Playstation pages on November 4th, and here is the link to the actual video. Since I don't know how long that will stay up on IGN, I have made a local copy - you can watch it on my video page (I just made it :)). I think the video came out pretty well, and who knows I might start hosting more videos on this site in the future.

Meanwhile, here are some links to previews of the game that are coming out:

GameSpot preview
Gamespy preview

As always, keep your eyes open on the GameRankings page for this game, and read up on the reviews it gets.

The AIAS wieners have been announced!
Sunday, 6 February 2005

If there ever was a piece of news that was received with less interest, I probably wasn't interested enough in noticing it. The academy has spoken, children, and as expected - a big, fat frog jumped out of its throat. Officially,  the game of the year is Half Life 2. A great victory for hype (read why here)! The rest of the winners are also pretty ridiculous - I would like to hear what was so damn innovative in HL2 (and if anyone says physics I will commit ritual suicide - having it does not excuse the sloppy implementation).
I am, of course, not shocked at all, since all these academy awards (in any industry) are generally bullshit. They either give the award to someone who is too old to know the difference and probably should have received the award ages ago, or to whatever generates the most hype. Seen any Oscar winning movies lately? They all suck, trust me. I laughed when I read the mission statement of the academy - find it here (looks like they have a lot to do in their life, that's probably why they always get it right :))

I am switching to misanthrope mode.
